Amelia Langford has spent nearly 27 years in Richmond. She is an award winning artist who has been featured in innumerable award shows. Amelia has done design work for over a dozen companies, from Capitol One, to the Wapsipinicon Almanac. Her street murals have appeared in Richmond and Norfolk Virginia.
Amelia's current project is, "The Treasure Hunt," an illustration based series, where she captures the spirit of a location through illustrating significant sites and landmarks in the area. She is also the designer behind Fanatical Artwork’s Clemson design, "The Tiger Within" and our upcoming VCU design.
As far as the beginning of her career goes, Amelia remembers feeling passionate about art since grade school.
"In first grade, I remember drawing Tommy Pickles from Rugrats. My dad put it on the fridge, at just the right height so I could see it. When I’d pass by I'd think, I'm good at this, and I like doing it."
When she was a teenager, she worked on local family farms, where they kept horses and had vegetable gardens.
"That's where my work ethic came from, waking up at 5 in the morning to pick potatoes, and you couldn’t leave the farm until the truck was full."
Amelia’s passion for the arts was tested just before she went to Virginia Commonwealth University to study illustration. The ligaments in her drawing hand mysteriously broke, and her future as an artist was in jeopardy. Or so she was told.
"At one point, the doctor told me, 'You're not going to be able to college, because you wont be able to use your hand,' and I thought, watch me. So I went through physical therapy and surgeries, and three or four months later I started my undergraduate career. Two years after that, I got a full ride and was in the honors program."
Most of all, Amelia is proud to be an artist.
"Find something you really love and that will always resonate with you, and you'll be able to look back and tell your kids and your family, I'm still doing it."
